Heishi means "shell", and refers to pieces of shell that had been drilled and hand rolled, or ground into bead shape and strung as necklaces.
The artist is from the Santo Domingo Pueblo tribe, located in New Mexico. The tribe's ancestral lands are located near an ancient turquoise mine. This has allowed the tribe to develop skill and a reputation for fine heishi and turquoise work.
