Beings wearing the Forked Eye Motif were understood in the southeastern ceremonial complex to reside in the Upper World. They have been found to be bi-forked, tri-forked or zig-zag lines down the face, suggesting preternatural qualities of watchfulness and power.
These are symbols of the Mississippian region, once part of the Chickasaw tribal homelands. Members of this widespread system of tribes with similar spiritual beliefs were early artisans who rendered the forked eye on a variety of items.
Many anthropologists suggest parallels to Peruvian art derived from eye markings of members of the falconidae or the flashing eye of the Thunder Bird.
