Totems to Turquoise: Native American Jewelry Arts of the Northwest and Southwest
Totems to Turquoise: Native American Jewelry Arts of the Northwest and Southwest
edited by Kari Chalker
Though published to accompany an exhibition held at the Museum of Natural History in New York (in 2004), this volume is not a catalogue but a stand-alone volume notable especially for the autobiographical essays contributed by 17 Northwest Coast and 22 Southwest artists. Each essay includes a full-page color plate of the artist's work, as well as a photograph of the artist. There are also essays on five earlier artists, including Bill Reid, Charles Edenshaw, Kenneth Begay, and Charles Loloma. The volume, which is oversized (9.25x11.25"), is beautifully illustrated with color plates and some b&w historical photos. Maps and a bibliography are provided.
