Bones Hooks: Pioneer Negro Cowboy

The son of former slaves, Mathew "Bones" Hooks left home at the age of twelve to pursue the rough-and-tumble life of a cowboy, during which he rubbed shoulders with other legends such as Colonel Charles Goodnight.  He grew to mythic stature in Texas not only for busting broncos but also for his work as a civic and social leader in Amarillo.
